The name "Chaos" and the corresponding symbol, the eight-pointed star (also called "Chaos Star", "Chaos Sphere" or "Symbol of 8") was borrowed by Peter Carroll from a fantasy novel: Michael Moorcock's "Elric of Melniboné - The Saga of the End of Time". Carroll, however, nowhere referred to the origin of his symbolism.
